SOUTH ASIAN ART TRUCK

‘Home Away From Home’ — South Asian Truck Art Project, commissioned by Colours of Redbridge

This incredible community project explores what home means to people in Redbridge, celebrating local heritage, identity and shared stories.

I was commissioned to design and transform an e-Transit into a road-worthy touring art truck inspired by the iconic trucks of Pakistan.

From my designs, I specified the size and shape of nearly 300 panels, which were then hand-crafted in Pakistan by master truck artist Abid Bhai. Using the remarkable techniques of embossed metalwork and intricate sticker layering, he created richly detailed, psychedelic designs featuring animals, plants and geometric patterns.

The truck also features eight bespoke hand-painted panels developed through community workshops in Redbridge, reflecting participants’ personal interpretations of home. Additional panels were handmade in London during community metal workshops led by myself and Frances Plowden.

The vehicle itself was reshaped and modified, with new features including a crown and decorative bumpers. The finished panels were then used to clad the truck’s exterior alongside other bespoke details.

Today, the truck tours schools and community events, sharing and celebrating South Asian culture with new audiences.

The project was also supported by The Leap in Bradford.
Lighting by Bailes+Light.

Special thanks to Frances Plowden, Justin Grant and Matt Webb for their help with the build, and to Jeff at Artcore International for providing space to create.
